Hobbies: Kayaking, Zumba, reading, singing, antiquing
Why I Teach: I became a teacher because of my college roommate and my family's tradition of being teachers. I come from a long line of mathematics teachers and engineers which has influenced me to become a nurturing, creative and inquisitive person.
In college, I had the opportunity to tutor my roommate and realized that there were many students who had not had positive experiences in school or with certain subjects. I was determined to be a teacher who built students' self-esteem and helped them succeed in areas that had previously been weaknesses. I chose to teach mathematics because I knew the subject matter was difficult for many students and I wanted to be an approachable teacher that was able to help students with a variety of comprehension levels.
I chose to teach English Language and Literature also because I have always loved to read and write. Growing up in rural Tennessee, I spent a large amount of time reading. I had a wonderful imagination and a love for words. I have continued to excel and enjoy writing throughout my education and career. I was a newspaper adviser for over 10 years and enjoyed adding journalistic style to my writing experiences.
It is rewarding to be able to look back on all of the students that I have been able to teach, mentor, and help over the past 18 years and I look forward to meeting the new students that I will be working with this year.
